Josef Frank (1885-1962) was a professor and an Austrian/Swedish building architect and a furniture designer. Josef Frank grew up in a Jewish family and studied architecture in his home town Vienna. In the years between 1910 and 1930 he was active as an architect in the new modernistic and functional spirits as well as a furniture and fabric artist in his own firm Haus & Garten.
Frank emigrated to Sweden in 1934. For more than 30 years he worked for Svenskt Tenn (Swedish Pewter) as a designer of furniture, lamps, glass and printed textiles. During the twenties Josef Frank collaborated with among others the textile weaving mill Backhausen in Austria. In their comprehensive archives there are a number of Frank’s original designs. Almedahls and Backhausen are collaborating since many years. We are here introducing a coordinated collection consisting of printed textiles and handtufted carpets. The whole collection consists of Josef Frank’s original patterns from 1920 to 1930.
