Josefine Wiel Fredén was born in 1981 in Göteborg, where she works as a textile designer and an artist. Josefine was trained at the HDK - School of Design and Crafts in Göteborg, which resulted in BFA and MA in textiles. Josefine has taken part in several exhibitions in Sweden as well as abroad. In 2008 for instance, she was invited as the only Swede to take part in a touring exhibition, starting in Paris in connection with the 7th International Shibori Symposium (ISS)”, arranged by the Paris American Academy and the World Shibori Network. Her works were then exhibited in Japan, England, France and the USA.
For Almedahls Josefine has designed the patterns LA and Wuchang and the carpet Istanbul. The sources of inspiration for the patterns are the expressions of old textile dyeing techniques from different parts of the world. Among other things the expression in Tie-dye and IKAT has inspired her very much. The colour shades, the light contra the dark and the controlled versus the random are some central elements in her designing.
“I am aiming at simplicity in my patterns, and my ambition is to create patterns that can be front figures in a room but also just glittering in the background. The light in the pattern is important and it is the common denominator of the three patterns which I have designed from Almedahls.”
“The starry sky and the glaring shining light of the big city inspired me to L.A. From twinkling stars in millions of galaxies far away and glittering raindrops on car windows, which are turned into diamonds when the light from neon signs, taxi-cabs and streetlamps hits them.” The pattern symbolizes the feeling of quietness and crowd at the same time. “I wanted to create a beautiful pattern with depth, gleaming and twinkling. The random expression has been important and the pattern should be open for the observer to arouse his own associations.”
